Copic tutorial – eyes and lips

So we continue our journey together ;)

This time I focus on the eyes and lips, and you will see a sneak on how I like to work with my favorite shading!

I made green eyes, which I often do. Probably because I’m blond with green eyes myself :)

First I start with inking in the whole iris with YG 11

Then I use YG13 and mark from the outside of the iris and stop right before the middle of the eye. You want that part to be much more lighter in the end.

I do the same thing with YG63, but a much smaller area right in the corners of the iris.

Work all over the iris with the lightest color to smoothen the colorlines.

So the same procedure until you are satisfied with the depth of the eyes.
Here I did it once again and you can see a large difference. I do this multiple times because I don’t need to bother about small mistakes like you have to do if you are working with dark colors from the start. If something goes wrong in the shading I just make another layer. Try doing THAT with a darker color ;)

Here I accidentally got some of the R20 outside the lips, and since my blender are dry I used E0000 to “take” it away. If something like that happens, always work TOWARDS  and “push” it back.
Then let the lips dry.

Over to the eyeshadow…
Use the color of your choice. I used the same as the eyes this time. Start from the inside and gently make a stroke where you want the lightest color to be.

Then take the darkest color and make the shade. I use it on the eyelid and a small amount in the outer corners. Just as I do my own makeup.

Now to the shading I like. Paint some R22 on a palette or acrylic block. Then use the R20 to pick up some of the R22, just a small small amount on the nib.

Here is a sneakpeek on my palette ;)

Make a small stroke right in the middle of the lips, since that is the place the lips usually are shaded. By using this technique you get smoother lines and you “make” R21 since it’s not dark as 22 and light as 20. You will see more of this in the next part! ;)
Also use the lightest shade to blend the eyeshadow a little, but be careful not to work to much since this is one of the places in the face that will show the most mistakes.

This is what we got so far. Next time we make some wings and clothes!

Coloring skin

I did this one with a kid on each side so I apologize if the photos or coloring ain’t perfect. At least I chow you how I color skin, and that’s what matters, right?!

So here we go! Click on images for a larger view.

Here I have inked in the whole area with E00. It looks little weird but that wont show later on.

Mark the nose with E51 and make some cheeks with R20. I always make the cheek strokes from the outside to get a more natural and easy blending look.

Blend them with E0000.

Make some shadows with E11. In this case I have marked cheek and some of the hair lines.
Make sure not to use too much. It’s easier to fill in than trying to fade out!

Now I have used E51 to enlarge the shadows to most of the part of the face that’s away from the light source. I also made a small shadow on the cheek that’s in the light source just to make it “pop” a little more from what’s underneath it.

Once again blend it all with E0000.

Ink in with E00 over the whole area once again to darken it a bit.

Here I have added some more of R20 and E00 to enhance the cheeks and shadows a little and finished off with a layer of E0000. If you don’t ink all the areas after shadowing you might get lines, that’s why I usually finish it of with a light color. The numbers 0000 rarely makes it darker, more likely the opposite!

You should also have in mind that the finished image looks slightly different when it’s completely dry!

Hope this helps someone. Next week I’ll continue with eyes and lips ;)
